'Collecting Queensland Festivals' is an initiative of the Queensland Museum Resource Centre Network. The project has encouraged contemporary collecting practices and exhibition development in many community museums throughout Queensland.

The Museum Resource Centre Network is an important partnership between the Queensland Museum, Arts Queensland and local councils. Our mission is to identify any significant collections in regional Queensland and to provide advice and assistance to best preserve and document them.

Six Museum Development Officers, known as MDOs, are employed by the Network. We are based at Centres in Cairns, Townsville, Rockhampton, Noosa, Ipswich and Toowoomba.

We selected community festivals as an important community story that might encourage contemporary collecting practices throughout Queensland. Regional museums were chosen and they collected ephemera, memorabilia and oral histories from eleven very different festivals. With the assistance of the MDOs, regional museum volunteers accessioned the objects and stories into their collection and created a themed display at each of the eleven participating museums.

The final stage of this project is to present these festivals as an online exhibition, thanks to Q150 funding. Explore the website, discover the world of regional Queensland museums and enjoy a snapshot of our stimulating and imaginative festivals.

Many people helped with this project, including museum volunteers, TAFE photography students, regional council staff, festival organisers and technical officers. Their contribution is appreciated. Thanks also goes to all the Queenslanders who creatively celebrate their communities through festivals around our State.
