This section looks at the uniqueness of the Great Barrier Reef, its rich biodiversity, and the long evolutionary history of its inhabitants. Classification systems are outlined. Some of the abiotic factors affecting the survival of marine organisms are discussed as well as the biological relationships between organisms. Sponges and sea squirts are organisms of special pharmaceutical interest to scientists.
