David Hampton

David joined the Queensland Museum network in 2017 as Curator, Transport. Growing  up in Newcastle David developed a fascination with railways and steam locomotives as a child. This childhood obsession has developed into a career defined by history, illustration and art. He studied Fine Art at Newcastle University and trained as a printmaker whilst helping co-ordinate the university’s student art gallery –Watt Space. Seeking new challenges after graduating he began volunteering and later found employment in a variety of roles at Newcastle Museum. As part of a small team David worked on a diverse range of projects from live tattooing demonstrations to exhibitions exploring local First World War stories. Many of these projects gave him the opportunity to apply his experience as an artist, writer and sometimes performer to share stories and knowledge about history. David has also undertaken internships with the Museum of Applied Arts and Sciences in Sydney and Beamish Museum in the North East of England.

David has had the privilege to work with sign writers, poets and playwrights to find interesting and unexpected ways to activate museum objects and the stories they represent. These projects have driven his passion for increasing the accessibility of museum collections and exposing the stories they explore to new audiences.
