Anglerfish in new waters

My husband caught this fish at the weekend near Tin Can Bay.

Is it a type of toad fish? Could you identify it for us please?

Blackspot Anglerfish. Photo by Kate CarmichaelOur curator of fish, Jeff Johnson, has identified your fish as a Blackspot Anglerfish, Tathicarpus butleri.

This species is found in coastal waters across the north of Australia, from Houtman Abrolhos, Western Australia to Hervey Bay in Queensland. It is often found among inshore trawler bycatch, but is rarely seen by anglers. The maximum size is about 12 cm.

Your specimen is interesting as it represents the southernmost record of the species on the east coast of Australia. Thank you for making the effort to contact us and have it correctly identified. You have added to our knowledge of this species.
