Dotted Anemone Crab

Neopetrolisthes maculatus

Many species of reef animals live closely associated with one another for protection, or for food. This small crab-like crustacean is able to live amongst the tentacles of large anemones without being caught and eaten, unlike most other animals that come into contact with the tentacles of anemones. Like anemone-fish, they probably coat themselves in the mucus of the anemone so it does not even realise they are there. This species is often found in a male and female pair, growing up to 20-30 mm long.

Found throughout the tropical Indian and West Pacific Oceans.
