Artwork and Coming of the Light

The Torres Strait Islander festival of the Coming of the Light celebrates the arrival of European and South Sea Islander London Missionary Society clergy and teachers at Kemus on Darnley Island on July 1, 1871.  The LMS evangelised the Torres Strait Islanders with the Word of God before passing their mandate to the Anglican Church in 1915.

For Torres Strait Islander communities that moved to the mainland or grew up there, this ceremony has continued to be an important celebration, re-affirming culture and connections to home, celebrated where ever they are.
