Molluscan collections

Volute snails from the Great Barrier Reef and deep water off the Queensland Coast (QM Collection)Queensland has extraordinarily high diversities of marine and terrestrial molluscs. These encompass the megadiverse faunas of the Great Barrier Reef, the Wet Tropics, southeast Queensland and the Brigalow lands. The Mollusca collection contains:

  • more than 1 million specimens;
  • type collections of about 200 species;
  • emphasis on Queensland’s rich marine and terrestrial molluscan faunas;
  • a land snail database that now includes more than 200,000 specimens from over 2,000 localities throughout Eastern Australia. This database provides a valuable benchmark collection for environmental assessment;
  • approximately 95% of the land snail collection is databased, and about 60% of the marine species are databased;
  • recently donated large collections of exceptional scientific importance
