Beer, Chocolate, Wine and Science?

Discover the history and science behind your favourite beer, wine and chocolate during Queensland Museum’s After Dark events during National Science Week.

After Dark: The Science of….beer, wine and chocolate helps visitors learn the science behind some crowd favourites and for the adventurous, edible insects and explore the museum kid free!

Learn the story behind great beer from Australian beer writer of the year Matt Kirkegaard, hear some weird and wonderful facts from bone fide wine scientist, Ursula Kennedy from USQ and learn from Seatonfire Chillli Chocolate’s Jason O’Connor about matching beer and chocolate for a taste sensation you’ve never imagined.

In the kitchen science extraordinaire Dr Joel Gilmore demonstrates the chemistry of proteins, novel chemicals and new technologies while USQ’s Professor Lindsay Brown will talk about how purple super foods can reverse health issues.

Adults will get a fun science lesson from Street Science Steve using Bunsen burners and liquid nitrogen and there will be plenty of hands on fun and activities throughout the night.

At each event the museum will be open to explore with the iconic carriages and buggies of the past on show at Cobb+Co Museum, experience the steel and steam of The Workshops Rail Museum and at South Bank enjoy the hands-on fun of the Sciencentre and be amazed by the dinosaurs of Dinosaur Discovery: Lost Creatures of the Cretaceous included.

Queensland Museum Network Director and CEO Professor Suzanne Miller said the popular events often sell out and are part of an overall celebration of science for National Science Week.

“Science is fun and these events showcase the science behind Australia’s favourite foods and oldest beverages, National Science Week really helps explore activities that everyone can enjoy,” she said.

“Queensland Museum’s popular After Dark series quickly sell out and is always a crowd favourite, but this is the first time we have taken After Dark to the regions with events scheduled at The Workshops Rail Museum in Ipswich and Cobb+Co Museum.”

Each campus will have its own local beer supplier with Granite Belt Brewery featured at Cobb+Co Museum on Wednesday, 17 August, Pumpyard featured at The Workshops Rail Museum on Thursday, 18 August and Green Beacon featured at Queensland Museum on Friday, 19 August.

After Dark: The Science of…beer, wine and chocolate is supported by Inspiring Australia. The 18+  event runs from 5.30pm-9pm and tickets cost $21.
