Her 12 years as a Research Fellow in the University of Queensland included a 4 year Personal Service Contract with the US National Museum of Natural History (Smithsonian Institute). Honorary positions she has held include service on the biological panel of the ARC, the ABRS Advisory Committee and the Marine Science and Technology Grants Committee. She is an elected Honorary Life Member of the Australian Coral Reef Society, holds the Jubilee (1991) medal from the Australian Marine Sciences Association and a Queensland Museum Medal. She has published works on science history, museums and conservation. However, the majority of her more than 150 published works (including mongraphs) are in scientific journals and are on the taxonomy of the Ascidiacea – commonly known as Sea Squirts – a class of primitive chordates in the subphylum Tunicata in which (as Patricia Kott) she has described in the vicinity of 500 (mainly Australian, but also Antarctic and European) species, 12 genera and 7 families. She is regarded as a world authority on this group of organisms and her work has been supported by ABRS, MST and ARC grants.
