Ms Debra Lewis - Queensland Museum Staff

Section:

Palaeontology & Geology

Qualifications:

Biographical Info:

Debra has a varied career background from personal assistant within the medical fields of cardiology and neurology, to public relations and art.

She joined the museum in 1993 and worked in an interpretation and supervisory position on the public galleries. In 2001 she joined the Geosciences program working in a technical role in the field and lab. When Geosciences was moved to an offsite storage facility in 2002, she took up a new position with the Geosciences team!

Since then Debra has worked in a duel role, both as a site manager to the new locality and as the technician in charge of the wet prep lab, reproducing replicas of some of Queensland’s best known fossil specimens for research and display purposes both in Australia and Internationally. One of Deb’s major projects in 2005 was the Australian armoured dinosaur, the Minmi, which is now housed in the Smithsonian Institute in Washington DC. Another is the ongoing work to recreate high quality replicas of a variety of material, including extremely large sauropod bones, from the ‘Elliot’ site in Winton. The resulting replicas have been so outstanding that the demand has grown, and in turn Deb’s position has changed to a purely technical one, creating replicas full time!
