Fishes

Qualifications:

Dip App Sc (Biology)

Biographical Info:

Jeff has accumulated expert knowledge on the classification and distribution of Indo-Pacific, Australian and particularly Queensland fishes during his time at the Museum. He disseminates information on all aspects of ichthyology to the general public and scientific community through response to inquiries, media interviews, reports, articles, identification guides and scientific papers. Assistance is given to numerous researchers and students with identifications, project design and editing. He has wide experience in curation and fish collection management, in all methods of collecting and visually recording marine, estuarine and freshwater fishes and is an experienced scuba diver.

Chapters on fishes have been written for several books including The Brisbane River - A source book for the future; Wildlife of Greater Brisbane; Wild Guide to Moreton Bay; Wildlife of Tropical North Queensland and The Fishes of Australia’s South Coast. Jeff is an expert in the taxonomy of the Aploactinidae (velvetfishes) and Pinguipedidae (sand perches), but has also researched and published on various other families. New species of sweetlips, stargazer, unicornfish, sand perches and velvetfishes have recently been discovered and formally described. Ichthyological surveys have been conducted throughout various parts of Queensland to improve knowledge of the diversity and geographical ranges of the 2700+ fish species known from the state. Ongoing research includes the compilation of an inventory of the marine fishes of the Moreton Bay Marine Park. This will complement an annotated checklist of the 750 species of fishes recorded from Moreton Bay, which was published in 1999.

A report detailing fish colonisation on the recently sunk wreck of the HMAS Brisbane, off the Sunshine Coast, was completed in 2006. The image below shows Jeff recording fish species and their abundance on the wreck of ex HMAS Brisbane.
