In 1972 Val was appointed Curator of Arachnids at the Queensland Museum. The next few years saw many field trips to remote rainforest area from Cape York to Lamington Plateau. In 1985-6 she participated in an 18 month survey by the Lake Broadwater Natural History Association, which yielded a rich collection of Queensland spiders representative of the inland fauna. These and other collections made by Val during her Curatorship have contributed to the Museum's now substantial collections of tropical arachnids. Since retiring from the Museum in 1985 she has continued to work as an Honorary Associate and was honoured with a Queensland Museum Medal in 1988. In 1998 she was made an Honorary Life member of the Centre International de Documentation Arachnologigue (the International Arachnological Society). She has more than 40 publications to her name, including co-authorship of the Zoological Catalogue of Australian Arachnids and a Queensland Museum booklet on the identification of spider families. Her main interest is concentrated on the spider family Anaurobioidea; on which she has published extensively since 1991 funded by ABRS grants.
