Chris Burwell is Senior Curator of Entomology and look after the Queensland Museum’s collections of Hymenoptera (wasps, bees and ants), Lepidoptera (moths and butterflies), Odonata (dragonflies and damselflies), Neuroptera (lacewings), Ephemeroptera (mayflies) as well as number of smaller insect orders. His main research interest is the systematics, biology and ecology of Hymenoptera, specialising in ants and minute parasitic wasps (Chalcidoidea). Chris has surveyed ants widely in Queensland and New Caledonia and is interested in the potential of ants as indicators of environmental health and change. He is involved in several collaborative research projects using ants as bioindicators of climate change, the health of agricultural ecosystems and rainforest restoration, and is author of the Queensland Museum ‘pocket guide’ Ants of Brisbane. Together with Dr Chris Pavey (Northern Territory Parks and Wildlife Service), Chris also conducts research on the diet and foraging ecology of insectivorous vertebrates, especially bats.
