Biographical Info: 

Michael Westaway trained as an archaeologist studying the prehistory of Australia at the Australian National University and the University of Sydney obtaining his Honours in 1994. He obtained further qualification in Historic Archaeology at the University of New England. Between 1997 and 2001 Michael worked as an archaeologist for Aboriginal Affairs Victoria and then as a manager and biological anthropologist at the National Museum of Australia between 2001 and 2004 after completing postgraduate qualifications in biological anthropology through the Australian National University. Between 2004 and 2008 he managed the Willandra Lakes World Heritage Area, incorporating Mungo National Park, where he undertook research in close association with the Elders of the Willandra Lakes and managed numerous projects to enhance the interpretation and conservation of the World Heritage Area.

He is presently curator responsible for the Australian archaeology collections in the Cultures and Histories Program. Michael is in the final stages of his PhD program through the Archaeology and Palaeoanthropology Program at the Australian National University. His research has included field and museum based research in Australia, Indonesia, Tanzania, Israel, France, Holland, Germany and the United States and he has worked in various capacities on Australian Research Council Projects in Australia, India, Jordan and Cyprus.
