Biographical Info:

Director and Curator of the Museum of Tropical Queensland from 1987 to 2002, Dr. Wallace now concentrates on coral reef research throughout the Indo-Pacific as well as the fossil history of her specialist group, Acropora (the staghorn corals).

Acropora are the most varied and colourful of corals seen on a coral reef. The Museum's research has covered the areas of biodiversity, biogeography, distribution, abundance, taxonomy and systematics. The book 'Staghorn Corals of the World - A revision of the Genus Acropora' by Carden Wallace, is a culmination of more than 10 years of research and has involved almost 80 contributing researchers from around the world. The book is complemented by a CD-ROM 'Staghorn Corals of the world: A key to Species of Acropora', containing a LucID- based key to all species of Acropora and a photographic database of type specimens from museums around the world.

Dr Wallace’s current research programs include:

  • Bidodiversity and distribution of Acropora in the central Indian Ocean (with Dr Paul R. Muir and collaborators from India, Seychelles and Maldives; funded by the Committee for Exploration and Research of the National Geographic Society)
  • Fossil history of Acropora (with Drs B. R. Rosen, The Natural History Museum, student Clare White, Royal Holloway University and other collaborators from around the world)
  • A revision of the sea anemones (Actiniaria) of Australia (with Dr D. G. Fautin and Andrea Crowther of University of Kansas; funded by Australian Biological Resources Study)
  • Corals and sea anemones of Moreton Bay, a marginal coral reef area in southern Queensland (with Ida Fellegara of Queensland University, Dr Peter Harrison of Southern Cross University, and sea anemones collaborators above)
  • Phylogeny, molecular biology, distribution and evolution of Acropora (with Dr Allen Chen and students of Academia Sinica of Taiwan, Dr Paul R. Muir of MTQ and numerous other collaborators throughout the world).
