Biographical Info: |
Dr. Muir has worked part time for the Museum of Tropical Queensland since 1999 and is currently a Research Assistant with the Corals Section. Research involves working on the taxonomy, evoloution and biogeography of the Acropora or staghorn corals. Staghorn corals comprise the largest group of reef corals and are the dominant genus in most of the world's reefs. Work includes databasing, microscopy, genetics, programming and some field work which involves SCUBA diving and underwater photography. Recent field trips have included research in the Seychelles, Lakshadweep and Maldives as part of a National Geographic funded study into Indian Ocean Acropora. Dr. Muir first worked on corals in 1984 during an Honours degree involving a study of the reproduction and genetics of Pocillopora damicornis, describing a mechanism for asexual planula production in corals. Following this he switched to aquaculture, studying marine microbiology and water quality, completing a PhD which looked at losses to disease in penaeid prawn hatcheries and a post-doc project which investigated sediment microbiology and its role in improving pond production of penaied prawns. Prior to joining the Museum he operated a part-time business to R & D new methods of hatchery production of penaeids which would improve production and minimise environmental impacts.
