Did you know?

The Inland Freshwater Crab is common throughout Outback Queensland, making its burrows in river and creek banks. During the dry season or extended drought, the crab plugs up its burrow and goes into a dormant state. It can stay like this for at least six years and is capable of losing almost half its body water and still surviving.

Tell me another one.

The Discovery Guide highlights more than 55 towns and settlements in an area stretching from Camooweal, Mount Isa and Hughenden, south to the New South Wales border and from just east of the Matilda Highway to the Northern Territory and South Australian borders.

It includes traditional guide book information on facilities, special attractions and annual events, but also utilises the expertise of Queensland Museum staff in providing an overview of the geology, climate, landscape, environment and human history of Outback Queensland. The text is further enhanced by historical timelines and maps for each town and short snippets on plants and animals, colourful Outback personalities and significant historical events.

More than 650 photographs some of the most stunning Outback images you will ever see capture the extraordinary beauty of Far Western Queensland in all its many moods and colours, opening your eyes to a world that even the locals may not recognise.
