This is the story of the women of Queensland’s outback. Our title comes from a poem published by George Essex Evans in 1902. Evans’s poem talks about pioneer women leaving what they knew to make a new life in a country that they experienced as difficult and hostile. The West of this exhibition is not so much a place, but a condition and a way of life in remote and difficult places. The Queensland Museum’s Women of the West display recreates this experience, bringing Evans’s poetry to life.
