Elapid Land Snakes (Family Elapidae, Subfamily Elapinae): South-east Queensland

Elapids are venomous snakes with fangs (hollow teeth connected via ducts to venom glands near the eyes) that are fixed at the front of the upper jaw. The majority of Australian elapids are inoffensive and virtually harmless. Twenty-two species of elapid land snakes live in, or near, the Greater Brisbane Region. Eight of these are considered capable of inflicting potentially fatal bites. Arranged in alphabetical order by scientific name.
