Snakes & The Queensland Museum

The three most venomous snakes in the world - the Western Taipan (Oxyuranus microlepidotus), Common Brown (Pseudonaja textilis) and the Coastal Taipan (O. scutellatus) - occur in Queensland.

The job of the Queensland Museum's Reptiles & Amphibians section in studying these and other species, and in providing reliable information on them, is very important.

This work includes:

  • maintaining Queensland's reference collection of reptile and amphibian specimens;
  • saving lives by providing authoritative advice and reliable identification services;
  • preparing quality displays of reptiles and amphibians;
  • providing authoritative information for publication in books such as the Museum's Wild Guides; and
  • providing reliable information for web sites such as this one!
