Building Materials

The availability of affordable, easy to use building materials was an important factor in the popularity of the Queensland house as it evolved over the years. Timber and iron are the characteristic materials used in Queensland houses.

Once sawmilling was established in Queensland in the 1850s, timber was readily available as a construction material and became almost universal in its use.

Iron roofs are also a signature of Queensland housing. Iron could be transported long distances throughout the colonies, and only minimal framing was needed for building. Furthermore it was durable enough to withstand tropical storms better than tiles.
