The A7V In Retrospect
Crew members in front of an A7V
Seven A7Vs were lost in combat, with some of these passing into Allied hands. All German tank units were disbanded after the Armistice and the surviving A7Vs, with the exception of Mephisto, were scrapped by either the Germans or the Allies in the post-war years. Recently, a full size replica of Wotan (563) has been constructed and put on display at the Panzermuseum (Tank Museum) at Munster in Germany. The replica was built between 1987 and 1990. The A7V was more heavily armed, faster and had thicker armour than most Allied tanks, but they performed poorly on rough terrain and were prone to mechanical breakdown. A7Vs did perform well on occasion, but there were too few of them to ever make any real difference to the outcome of the war. The full story of Mephisto is told in Mark Whitmore's book published by the Queensland Museum and available from Queensland Museum South Bank's Shop. The book includes a poster showing the layout of Mephisto.
