Retro Slider, Lerista allanae

Retro Slider       location map

Problem:
The Retro Slider was discovered in 1929.  It has not been seen since 1960. Its likely extinction signifies a national ‘first' for Queensland – the first species of reptile to become extinct since white settlement.

Background information:
Almost all of the Retro Slider's suspected habitat has disappeared due to agriculture. Queensland Museum herpetologists, who have searched for this reptile since 1968, now believe it to be extinct.  They also warn that further clearing in the Brigalow Belt will lead to other extinctions of reptile species there.

Solution:
If the Retro Slider is extinct, it is too late to act.  However, it may not be too late for other species in the Brigalow Belt.  Their survival will depend on securing more reserves and developing incentives that will reduce environmental destruction in areas outside reserves.

The next species is the Nangur Skink
