Replication

Plastering

Everything that fossilised from the Earth's distant past can be replicated; from the smallest of ancient bivalves, footprints and trackways, plant impressions, teeth and bones both large and small; even ancient impressions of armour and skin.

The replications are created by making inner moulds with latex or silicon rubber and the outer structural moulds of plaster or fibreglass.

Depending on the size and shape of the specimen, a decision is made as to whether the final cast is thrown in a lightweight polyfoam or a solid resin. The copy is then painted to replicate the colours of the original specimen.

Replications within the Geosciences Department are created for display in both Australian and international museums and to assist in further research of a specific field of study.
