Tuberculate Sea Urchin
Heliocidaris tuberculata
The Tuberculate Sea Urchin is bright brown with a red tinge and green tipped spines; growing to about 100 mm in diameter, with spines 30-60 mm long, oval in section, and flattened at the tips. They are found in pools on open rocky headlands among rocks, extending down to about 50 m in depth. They are most common near the low-tide mark.
This species has a temperate and subtropical distribution throughout the western Pacific Ocean.
