SS Oronsay

SS Oronsay

SS Oronsay was a ship on the Orient line that was built after the second world war and sailed from the United Kingdom to Australia. This iconic and well-known ship brought migrants from post-war Europe to their new lives in Australia.

See a five metre long model of the SS Oronsay on display on Level 4.

We are also interested in hearing from people who have stories or objects to share in connection with the ship. Do you have a family connection to the SS Oronsay or a story to share? Share your story.

The Voyage of a Million Questions

Is Surfers Paradise a real paradise? What is a wombat? How do you say Mooloolaba?

These were just some of the questions asked by the 437 immigrants who arrived in Brisbane travelling on Queensland’s Centenary ship – the RMS Orion – in 1959.

This special trip was dubbed ‘the voyage of a million questions’, however every new migrant to Queensland has a million questions about the place they’ll be calling home.

Were you an immigrant? As a new arrival, what questions did you have about Queensland and what was your voyage here like, whether by sea or air?

The Voyage of a Million Questions is a program of activities happening in the Southbank Cultural Precinct from 12-30 November, focusing on the stories of the Orient Line and sea migration to Queensland.

Be sure to get involved as we celebrate the voyages that brought new migrants to Queensland’s shores!
