The Proclamation of Queensland

The Proclamation is one of the most important documents in Queensland’s history.

It declared Queensland a separate colony from New South Wales when it was read to an assembled crowd on 10 December 1859. Around 4,000 residents lined Brisbane’s streets to celebrate the historic occasion.

On loan from Queensland State Archives’ collection, the Proclamation will be on display at Queensland Museum South Bank from 4–12 December 2010. This provides a rare opportunity to view a carefully conserved, precious piece of our history.
