Brisbane Open House 2015

Have you ever wanted to know what happens behind the scenes at Queensland Museum? Have a sneak peek as Queensland Museum unlocks the collection store doors - for Brisbane Open House.

The Museum is like an iceberg with most of the objects hidden from view. On Saturday 10 October 2015, we’re opening our doors for free 30 minute ‘teaser’ tours that will take visitors to three select spaces within our Natural Environments Collection, Museum Library and Archive, and the Cultural Environments Collection. Get a taste of what happens in a museum and catch a glimpse of some of the millions of specimens and objects in the Queensland Museum State Collection.

Tour Details

The Natural Environments tour will include viewing unique animals (vertebrates) and seashells from the collection, including extinct and endangered species. This tour will highlight how these specimens, including stuffed animals, study skins, shells and more, are used for research and how specimens come into the collection. This tour visits the Vertebrates and Molluscs collection.

Queensland Museum Library and Archive is the second oldest Library in Queensland. As well as the traditional monographs and serials of a natural and cultural heritage research library, the QM Library holds original material including 19th Century field guides, logbooks of early Queensland discoveries and rare and unique titles of early European exploration. The oldest book in the Library dates from the 1500s. The Archives holds some of the earliest records of European collecting in Queensland. The tour will highlight some of these unique and rare items in the Queensland Museum Library and Archive.

The Cultural Environments tour will include both the Social History store and the Anthropology store and will focus on how objects come into the collection, how we look after objects and how objects are used for research and visitor engagement. The tour will focus on several key objects from the Social History Collection and the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Collection.
