Behind the Scenes Tour

Delve into the mysterious unseen world of the Museum’s collection stores with our expert tour guides. The Museum is like an iceberg – only a small part of our huge collection is on display. Behind the scenes, we have an amazing world to explore, with millions of objects and specimens.

This guided tour takes you behind the scenes for a unique chance to see the priceless collections up close and learn more about how we store and look after these precious objects and specimens.

All creatures great and small make their way into our Natural Environments collection, where our scientists care for and study Queensland’s natural history.

Specimens on display include those that span the entire animal kingdom: from tiny single-cell protozoans to blue whales; from specimens collected last week to others collected 150 years ago; and from living species to those that are now extinct.

The tour also visits select areas of our Cultural Environments collection, where our team of expert staff undertake research into Queensland’s cultural heritage. We collect and care for items that represent the history of the state and demonstrate what sets us apart. You'll see incredible cultural artefacts and objects reflecting Queensland and Australian History, including objects that reflect Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander History.
