About the curator

Dr Andrew Rozefelds is the Head of the Ancient Environment Program at Queensland Museum.

He worked at the Queensland Museum from 1977 to 1991, when he went  to undertake further studies in Adelaide and then completed a PhD in botany at the University of Melbourne.

He then worked as botanist in Tasmania for eight years where he described new species of plants from Australia, and undertook field work around Australia. He also worked as Deputy Director Collections and Research at the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery from 2004-2011.

After a twenty year gap, Andrew returned to the Queensland Museum to take on the challenges of managing what is the largest collection of fossils in the Southern Hemisphere. He says that “this unique collection gives us important insights into the history of life on the planet – but with a uniquely Queensland focus”.

His current research is looking at how life re-emerges and evolves after a major environmental catastrophe. The Queensland fossil record allows us to do this through the remarkable animals that survived the “mother of all extinction” events at the end of the Permian Period, 250 million years ago.
