Make and create in our special daily workshops.  Workshops are conducted by Torres Strait Island guest presenters.  Spaces are limited.

Weaving with Aunty Edna Billy

Date: Friday 23, Sunday 25 September
Time: 11:00 and 1:00pm
Visitors sit with Aunty Edna and hear her stories about Torres Strait Islander culture, and learn how to weave Torres Strait Island mats, baskets and creatures from palm leaves.

Malu Kiai Dance Group

Date: Monday 19 September

Malu Kiai is a Torres Strait Islander dance group. Malu Kiai is the traditional name given to the people of Boigu Island in the North–Western Torres Strait. Their songs and dances, based upon the everyday life of Torres Strait Islander people, have been passed from generation to generation.

Migi Buay Dancers

Wonderful family group showcasing dances from the Badu Island tradition as handed down from generation to generation. Including an explanation of each dance and what it means.

A 4-piece Rock/Soul band full of energy and satire (including about kids TV show themes). Contemporary songs, modern and pop music. Great for the whole family.

Classik Nawu

Torres Strait Island urban contemporary Hip/Hop, R&B and Reggae. Join us for this awesome original showcase.

Gold Coast Dance Group

Date: Tuesday 27 Sept
Time: Workshops (also in QMSB Theatre): 10am and 1pm
Visitors will be drawn into culture, the history of the dances and hear an explanation of the instruments and grass skirts. You will even engage with a bit of dancing!
Performances: 11am and 2pm
Develop an awareness of the rich Torres Strait Island cultures, Badu Island people’s perspective and how knowledge and culture stems from mother nature and the importance of the seasons. Hear songs and sounds from the ocean.
