Magic moments: Cinema advertising slides in the spotlight

Queensland Museum holds several sets of magic lantern slides used for cinema advertising in the 1940s and 50s. These slides represent a turning point in Australian popular culture, demonstrating the transition from static to moving pictures as the main form of entertainment. The slide sets are remnants of the fashionable magic lantern touring shows of the late 1800s, which captivated audiences who were new to concepts of projection and photography.

Join us to discuss some of the ways in which cinema slides illuminate our social and cultural history through visual entertainment.
